One Person's Stuff...Another Person's Art ..Baltimore ACC Show

All that glitters at the ACC show may not be gold. One Person's Stuff is Another Person's Art....and, I am glad to see this imagination used with such creativity.

I met Baron Rene von Richthofen at the Baltimore's American Craft Council Show this week. This very charming man creates art out of a variety of materials but mostly car parts and miniature cars. He uses the term "controlled chaos" descibing how he attaches these materials that fuel his imagination.

''The automobile is the most important invention of the last century. It has given us freedom of mobility and has systematically led to every advantage we currently take for granted. Along with its practical purposes, I celebrate the finer points of the automobile that have brought the world together and have inspired our inner child....My art is abut how this invention changed us. Like all change,it's neither all good nor all bad."  www.richthofenart.com.

As many know, I am former ceramic artist and the ACC show is one not to be missed. Each year walking through the isles of over 700 of the country's top contemporary craft  artists, there are few that catch my eye. This year it was the art of the toy car..maybe because of spending time and getting to know C Tann Starr and her boys. This artist may be the only person who has more cars than Stephen, the Minion Blur.

The Baron uses the term "controlled chaos" to descibe how he attaches these materials that fuel his imagination. Stephen's mom has a group "Club Chaos".

The Craft show opens my eyes and mind to so much stimulation. Each artist could be another entire subject for a post. Do we always have to write about real estate? Of course not! But our lives are so much better from all the people we meet and all the things we see and experience.

All that glitters at the ACC show may not be gold. One Person's Stuff is Another Person's Art.  And, I am glad to see this imagination used with such creativity.

Glocal #6 Lesson Of The Omelets part 2 of 2

This is a REBLOG written by Carra Riley! Please comment on Carra's post!

Glocal #6 Lesson Of The Omelets part 2 of 2

Part 1 of 2 #5 Glocal Lesson Of The Omelets
                                         Eco Park Sign
For the rest of the story….not having a camera available for the “photo op” at the omelet bar in Nassau led me to re-create the situation at a later date to have digital images for the “glocal” moment. While staying in the rain forest on the Amazon above Manaus, Brazil the opportunity arose to capture the “lesson of the omelet" in the Amazon Eco Park at the breakfast buffet. The photo of the omelet with the man behind possibly shows the sentiment of some of the residents along with the local actions reported in a newspaper article. You can be the judge of the lesson of the lesson of the omelet in Manaus, Brazil.

It has taken me some time to publish this post as I was not sure how to represent the other side of “Connecting The Dots Around The World.” When I embarked on this journey around the world, I had some kind of “Polly Anna” idea that there would be some mystic revelations and everything would be positive and would write as PF Kluge  shared in a Global Studies class “happy yappy” reports. PF Kluge in an instructor on the ship and has been described on his website as “Novelist, journalist, professor: a trifecta, a hat trick, a trinity.” He tells it like it is and minces no words. He co-authored the “Life” magazine article that was the basis of the movie “Dog Day Afternoon.”

After some deep contemplation of the experience in Manaus it appeared as though there are mixed messages from the government vs. the people. Manaus had to hire security and 5 extra agents to be “present” by the dock as the ship community walked around. An article indicating “Students pay $300 per day to learn about the world” can’t be located online in the January 25, 2011 Amazonas em Tempo  newspaper.

The Newspaper article was shared in a journalism class on the ship as the students had to bring articles in from the ports to discuss in class. Where did the online article go? What does that headline say to the people of Manaus, who according to the text book “Atlas of Global Development” on a poverty map shows that 10 to 24% of the population in Brazil lives on less than $1.25 per day?

Favela It appears as through Brazil is working hard to change the past image with street violence and life in the favelas.

Our group had different Manaus experiences with street people attempting to take jewelry right off the neck of a lifelong learner. Several students were bitten or scratched by monkey’s and had to have rabbies shots after being attacked in the lobby of a hotel with pet monkey’s running around.

There was an encounter with a stalker following a group of three women. Nothing happened as the man went off after being confronted, however, it appeared as though he had a gun under his shirt in his back pocket as he walked away.

A student shared an incident where a bus driver took the long way around back to town which included an unscheduled stop for lunch and an accident dragging a woman on the ground as the bus took off where he then had to get off the bus and get on a different bus as the bus driver took the woman to the hospital.

Five days in Manaus, Brazil seemed like a long time when one of the University officials on the ship indicated in a pre-port lecture, 2 days was enough for Manaus.

Our visit might have been a beta test for things to come in Brazil. One newspaper article reports: "As Brazil prepares to host the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup, the country expects nothing short of an urban renaissance."

Brazil is preparing for The world cup in Manaus in four years and in eight years Rio will host the Olympics.
The PR blitz has started and it appeared as we could have been the recipients of practice for the future. In describing preparations for the arrival of the MV Explorer, the local paper, “A Critical,” expressed the fact the Military Police had security and five agents to monitor activities at the port. They also referred to the ship as a "luxury hotel" which could have possibly been an indication of the "back story" of the Brazilian attitudes about the visitors with the need for protection along with the interesting description of the ship.

The article was in Portuguese.
“O navio está em Manaus desde a manhã de ontem, e os visitantes foram recepcionados por um grupo de dança folclórica. ‘Estaremos à disposição dos estudantes’, informou o diretor de turismo da Amazonastur, Jordan Gouvêa. Em Manaus, o grupo de universitários terá segurança garantida pela Polícia Militar, que destacou cinco agentes para acompanhar as atividades no porto.

In English:
“The ship is in Manaus since yesterday morning, and visitors were greeted by a folk dance group. ‘We will be available to students,’ the tourism director of AmazonasTur, Jordan Gouvea. In Manaus, the group of students will have security provided by the Military Police, said that five agents to monitor activities at the port.

More in Portuguese:
“Liberdade de escolha A coordenadora de extensão Debbie Clifford foi quem levou a equipe de A CRÍTICA para conhecer o navio, que mais parece um hotel de luxo e cuja língua oficial é o inglês. ‘A viagem dura 104 dias, portanto tem de tudo aqui’, explicou, contando que no MV Explorer há desde salas de aula, até um deck com piscina, além de refeitórios e quartos. Em solo amazônico, os alunos terão por volta de 35”\

English translation:
"Freedom of choice The extension coordinator Debbie Clifford was the one who led the team of A CRITICAL to meet the ship, which looks more like a luxury hotel and whose official language is English. "The trip lasts 104 days, so it has everything here," he said, noting that since the MV Explorer for classrooms up to a deck with swimming pool, and dining areas and bedrooms. In Amazonian soil, students will have around 35 activities."

Connecting the lesson of the Omelet, taking the global thinking to local action, going glocal.

Before docking at our first port, a camera etiquette lesson was provided to the ship community emphasizingomelet sentiment the importance of requesting permission to take photos in the countries we were visiting. Being a respectful student, the omelet man at the Amazon Eco Park was asked if it would be possible to photograph an omelet prior to actually taking the picture. He indicated it would be ok and stepped back from the omelet pan. The photo was taken quickly to get out of the way. When the photos was being cropped the real sentiment of the worker in Brazil at the Amazon Eco Park became evident with his hand gesture.

The article along with the local comments online show the sentiments of the community. Thinking global and acting local, this representation of the community is a reminder that people are watching what a community does to respond to visitors.

Visitors look at what is going on in a community, what is being written in the newspaper and then make their decisions as to what direction they will take with coming back or sharing the experience with friends.

Learning from the omelet maker in Nassau and the gentleman above shows that the entire community has an effect on how a visitor perceives the area.

The Amazon Eco Lodge rain forest jungle experience was all good with a very knowledgeable guide and pleasant memories. We learned how to survive with water from a parasite root, create poison darts from palm tree spikes an  special moss along with making fire torches from the sap of a camphor tree. Our guide was delightful, he loved his land and shared that with us. We caught a piranha and one of the guides caught a caiman alligator so we had a great Amazon rain forest experience. Would I tell someone to visit to Manaus, Brazil? You be the judge!

The “glocal” lesson of the omelet is to embrace those visiting your community anywhere in the world with kindness and respect. Community involvement and individual dedication to the economic survival of the area or even an individual business is a must to change perceptions and attract new immersion from those testing the waters and looking to see what the location has to offer.

Remember the your actions within a community express the attitude of your environment. Be like the omelet lady from Nassau.  Embrace all visitors with kindness and respect if you want the local area to grow and prosper together.

Don't forget to "Get in the game" as there is plenty of time.  Win a travel voucher and great prizes to one of the seven wonders of the world. This is an exciting opportunity to experience a town that embraces its visitors and wants to create a memorable experience so you will be sure to tell your friends to come and visit.

Serengeti at the Baltimore ACC Show This Weekend

Here is a bit of the Serengeti..as seen this weekend in Baltimore  at the  American Craft Council Show February 24-27th.

I found the crocodile and the giraffe done by the same artists Scott and Jodi Causey who are from Sarasota, Fl.  They were a wonderful in moving the large ceramic crocodile on the left so  I could get a better picture. My suggestion was to get a couple of Stefan's books to display with the animals. Guess I am always marketing.

The photo of the middle crocodile was a small jewelry pin by Sean Brown, an artist from Denver, Colorado

Tonight I see Karen's post The Graceful Giraffe meets the Type E Personality   and made this comment: '' Karen, I love this post! Well of course, I would...it's about me! Could you move to Baltimore? I really need a good translator. ..so rare and so hard to find! Just found out from your last post that you and I are both Registered Nurses..my first career.  Glad you liked the photo of the giraffe taken yesterday at the ACC craft show in Baltimore.''

Black, White, Yellow, Red and One for Peg! ACC Baltimore Craft Show!

For over 30 years the annual American Craft Council Show has been in Baltimore! American Craft Council Show Will Be in Baltimore This Weekend! February 24-27th

As a former ceramic artist, I am not sure if I have missed an ACC show. Over the years I have gone with my friend and publisher Peg Silloway. Today was even more special. Peg's baby sister, Kathleen, joined us...and did we have fun!

Take a look at this hat marathon.

Sometimes it really pays to be the picture taker rather than the subject. This was at the end of our day. All of us were a bit tired since we started walking the show about 6 hours earlier.

I think know Kathleen really enjoyed the different colors, style and personality of each hat. The owner of Moire's Millinery seemed pleased with our modeling. And I loved taking the photos!

Watch for more photos of the ACC in the next day or so.

Thanks Peg and Kathleen for a wonderful day of friendship, eye candy, lunch and laughter.

A Baltimore Date...Movie at the Charles and a Crepe

How about a movie at the Charles and afterwards a  Crepe treat right next door?

The Charles is located at 1711 N.Charles St. just two blocks north of Penn Station of Baltimore's Penn Station

The structure that holds the Charles Theater was  designed in 1892 (119 years ago) by architect Jackson C. Gott. "The Beaux-Arts buildings were originally designed to be a cable car barn (north side) and a powerhouse (south side). The buildings served as cable car facilities for four years after which they became a streetcar barn, a bus barn, a library for the blind, and the Famous Ballroom. In 1939, the Times Theatre opened on the site as Baltimore's first all-newsreel movie house. The theater was re-named the Charles circa 1959 and became a calendar revival house in 1979. The Charles remained a single-screen theater until 1999, when a dramatic expansion was completed to accommodate four additional screening rooms. The new five-screen Charles has a spacious, comfortable lobby and the four new screening rooms have stadium seating. The original auditorium still has 485 seats and has been altered only slightly."

Right next door is friendly and warm place to walk in and order a crepe. You can sit in the window counter or if weather permits, the sidewalk tables. There is a nice selection of savory crepes as well as sweet dessert crepes. They are open 7 days a week with new hours:

Monday thru Wednesday 5:00pm - 9:00pm
Thursday thru Saturday 11:30am - 11:00pm
Sunday 11:30am - 8:00pm

American Craft Council Show Will Be in Baltimore This Weekend! February 24-27th

You will find me at the ACC this weekend just like every year in the past. The show will be February 24-27, 2011.

There will be more than 700 artists including jewelry, clothing, furniture and home accessories.  The ACC is the largest juried indoor craft show in the nation.

                                             ACC 2011

Here are some of my observations from the past FOUR years. The crafts are as varied as the artists represented. There will be lots more photos this weekend when I visit the  Convention Center right here in Baltimore. Let me know if there is a special artist or type of craft that you would like me to seek out. Let me know before Friday morning.

As a former ceramic artist, I never  miss this special show, though I have gone for different reasons over the years. When I was a working artist it was for ideas, for booth displays, learning about the artists and of course networking --seeing my art clients there and staying in front of the public. Now that I am in real estate, I find that when I am doing something that I really enjoy, there are others with the same interests. Surviving Your Serengeti..The Rome Way

Surviving your Serengeti: An ActiveRain Challenge

                                           Croc Boot HomeRome 410-530-2400

While reading Stefan Swanepoel's book Surviving Your Serengeti, I could not help comparing it to my  book Real Estate the Rome Way, We both have a quiz. You can take the Type E quiz here

Real Estate the Rome Way      Surviving your Serengeti
This is how the Type E Mystic is described...
'You’re a mystic visionary who operates so far outside the box you can’t remember where the box is most of the time. Since you have more than just your head in the clouds, it can be a challenge to communicate your ideas and passions to other people.

You’ve also got the gift of time travel, that is, the ability to bring the vision of our world’s future into the present. Without you, human experience would be an endless stream of mundane routines, never reaching for the limitless possibilities that you bring to the rest of us.

Type E Mystics have an uncanny ability to see the big picture even before anything can be seen on the horizon. Their challenge lies in dealing with the details and communicating their vision to others. They require the help of a Type E Translator to put their ideas into action and a Type E Manager to keep  things running smoothly.

When in balance, Type E Mystics are the picture of creativity, enjoying every second of life. Out of balance, they likely will experience a roller coaster ride that creates extreme levels of stress for  themselves, their businesses and families as well.'

                                              crocodile head

After reading the first two chapters of  Surviving Your Serengeti, I took the quiz and found out I was none other than the crocodile.  I love the comparison.

As the crocodile... you are an enterprising and resourceful person... you see the opportunities by keeping your mind open and active. You understand that by being creative, confident and bold enough..you can  seize the opportunities that present themselves... you  may even  have the ability to influence the outcome of future events.

Crocodiles show a willingness to undertake new projects, and a strong desire for success and achievement—all qualities that support the role of the entrepreneur.... energy, creativity, and ambition required to see the possibilities in the future that others cannot see.  Enterprisingindividuals are passionate about their work, learn from mistakes, understand their weaknesses as well as their strengths, recognize opportunity, and make strategic decisions with limited data.

If you are an enterprising person, you’ll see the following characteristics in yourself:  The ability to “think outside the box” when facing difficult problems.... support and encourage imaginative and creative solutions.  The determination to succeed... another important trait...self-confidence...and the tendency to spend a lot of time working alone....  Entrepreneurs have a strong desire to lead rather than follow; they  seek out opportunities that specifically provide a great deal of autonomy. They seek out change, rather than fearing it.

As a Type E Mystic and a now a crocodile... I feel that both describe me and are quite similar.  I have that  willingness to go against the crowd and stand above.  I take advantage of difficult situations, and I don’t allow them to become burdens.

Enterprising people understand exactly what to do when opportunity knocks.

They don’t complain about the noise!

Dining in Baltimore... Bluestone

Time to celebrate a wonderful friend's birthday with dinner at Bluestone  located at 11 W. Aylesbury Road, Timonium, MD 21093. This is an upscale seafood restaurant but also has a good selection of steaks and grills.

There were seven of us and the food and company were delightful. Our waiter, Andy, did his job with perfection..and he was really attentive and cute!

So again lots of good conversation but  once again, it was too late! I forgot to photograph the food even though I promised not to.

I am getting to be a master at this.

Noticing a very romantic couple at the next table, having pre dinner drinks ...just look what they are doing...both have their phones out and I took a photo. They were smiling when I then asked permission.  (Well I would have lost the shot if I asked first.)

Explaining that we ate, got carried away with conversation, and good times and I really forgot to take pictures of our food.  Told them I would like to photograph theirs...they were very agreeable. And with each course, signaled me over and explained each dish.
