Let Em Eat Cake

What a wonderful busy couple of days.  On Thursday September 8th, there was the first virtual RainCamp in the morning and the late afternoon we had a wonderful ActiveRain MeetUp in Baltimore. My daughter, Erica and Lee arranged to have this delicious chocolate cake to celebrate my birthday.

                                            Chocolate Cake HomeRome 410-530-2400

And we had chocolate cake!

On Friday morning, a home inspection attended by the buyers, friends, and a contractor.

And we had chocolate cake.

Friday afternoon at 4 PM we had  another smooth settlement for this contemporary rancher located in the Pill Hill -Mount Washington area of  Baltimore, MD 21209.   It was a delight turning over the key to this first time homebuying family.

Their smiles made the rainy day seem like bright sunshine.

And again we had cake.

After the settlment, I had a showing on my listing at   7014 Deerfield Rd. Pikesville, MD. 21208 Colonial Village With a Two Story Addition. By this time there were only two pieces of cake left which I shared with the owners...still in the original box and my sellers loved the treat.

Let Em Eat Cake.

This delicious cake celebrated a birthday, a home inpection a settlement and a showing!

Active Rain Meetup in Baltimore, MD-Happy Birthday Margaret Rome!

We had the best time with a wonderful group who showed up to share the RainCamp Meetup and coincidentally my birthday!

Each and every person was a joy and the camaraderie was oozing! Bridget has always been available to support every single gathering and this was no different. Bridget really captured our meetup..with  this post below.
Thank you for taking care of the check! Thank you for making everyone feel so welcome. Thank you for the gift and for the fabulous card from Sydney. The front of the card said "Happy Birthday" with a face within a heart. Amazing how she made that card stand up.

Even more important...thanks for the gift of your friendship!

Meetups were scheduled all over the Country and I was surprised that there wasn't anything scheduled in Maryland.  I thought about trying to gather the Maryland Rainers...but then I didn't.  I got a call from Ellie McIntire.  She wanted to plan something.  I suggested she call Margaret.  She did and Margaret stepped up and took the "Rains".
The next thing you know, a Meetup was planned, a blog was written and re-blogged and calls were made.  I have been so blessed to have been a part of several Maryland Meetups, most of which have been organized by Margaret.  Based on my experience with the previous meetups, I knew that there was no place else I could be tonight.
It's been crazy weather in Maryland lately.  The last few days, flooding has been rampant.  Trees are falling down, power has been out, basements are filled with water.   An earthquake, a hurricane, and now rain that doesn't seem that it will ever stop.  Funny, it's kinda like my dance here.  A rumble, a push, and now I can't imaging my business or my life without the Rain!
I wasn't surprised that Margaret chose the Suburban House, it is her kitchen after all.  Since today is Margaret's birthday, I was so glad to see her beautiful daughter and her husband Lee when I walked in.  They sure seem to understand Margaret and the importance of her Active Rain relationships.

It was so great to see familiar faces and connect with new ones. I got to spend the most time with Anne Arundel County Historic Home Expert Martha Brown, one of Crofton's Premier Realtors, Rich Iarossi, the lovely Charm City Realtor , June Piper Brandon, Chip, of Charm City Staging, and of course Margaret Rome herself.  The conversation was about life and about the market.  It was lively and insightful. These are some sharp folks!  It was great to see Howard County and Catonsville Expert Ellie McIntire, (Sydney's future Mother-in-law?), the ever-smiing Rosa Almond and Hillary Gibbons Wyss of Roo Solutions, a company I am looking forward to checking into!  Carolyn (C-Tann) Starr even made the trek from New York, it was so lovely to see her!

If you are from the area, I know there are lots of reasons why you didn't make it.  There's always something else to do, work to be done, family who needs you, maybe you were even one who was bailing out the basement.  Next time there's an event, I encourage you to take a cue from C-Tann Star.  Carolyn found out about the meetup THIS MORNING.  She hopped in the car and drove down from New York, in the rain.  She said that this was just where she needed to be!  I get it.  Me too!

Happy Birthday Margaret.  As Sydney's Birthday Card to her said:  "I hope you have good days and nights and I hope you have a good time with your Active Rain Friends"   Here is wishing you a wonderful year!!  Thanks for sharing your day with us!

A special thanks to our great servers from Suburban House.  Great job!  Thank you for making this such a great evening!

Rain in Baltimore did NOT deter Active Rainers.

Rain in Baltimore did NOT deter Active Rainers.

Yesterday, Saturday February 5th 2011, sandwiched in between new Buyers in Elkridge and a military family relocating to the area and wanting to purchase in Ellicott City, I had the incredible pleasure of joining a hearty bunch of people from Active Rain for Lunch at The Suburban House on Reisterstown Road in Baltimore.

Margaret Rome was our gracious and generous hostess. Last year in March I enjoyed a lovely Active Rain evening with delicious Maryland Crabcakes thanks to Margaret.

It was quite a "who's who" with a lot of wonderful people. Who do you see?

Rainers Eat Well in Baltimore. Have You Seen a Matzoh Ball Smile?

Today I saw a matzoh ball smile and I think it was because 25 ActiveRainers were having such a good time in Baltimore. The place was Suburban House and here is a sampling of the various lunches.

One Plus One Equals Two Dozen When You Start With The Right One! ActiveRain Gathering in Baltimore!

One Plus One Equals Two Dozen When You Start With The Right One!
ActiveRain Gathering in Baltimore!

How can one plus one equal two dozen?
1+1= 2 Dozen HomeRome 410-530-2400

It all started a few weeks ago when Mary Yonkers commented that she would be in the Baltimore area. A phone call to set up a date turned into a full blown ActiveRain happening.

It was just going to be the two of us meeting (one plus one) until I wrote a post asking others to join us. Mary, plus three other reblogs,  plus word of mouth has turned into a gathering of over 25.

How cool is that?

Whenever I hear a member say something like:  "I wish we could do that in an area closer to me."  my suggestion... pick up the phone, send an email, make a comment or better yet write a blog. It only takes you and one other person to have a date.  You may wonder..."What if no one else shows up?"

If you have chosen someone you like and admire to have lunch with.."How can you go wrong?"

The worse thing that can happen...you get to know another professional a bit better..Give it a try in your area.
Look at the group that is gathering for lunch this Saturday!

Meet Me For Breakfast!

                                    Suburban House HomeRome 410-530-2400

An email from a potential buyer wanted to meet  at a property at 10 AM this morning.  Delighted with the interest but how do I fit this in? I have a 12:30 comittment.

On our last  get together, we spent almost three hours at the house..more than enough time to get a feeling for this very special home. The round trip alone is an hour and half, minimum. (Yes there is a reason I took the property this far away and if you like I can blog that at a later date.)

How do I arrange a face to face meeting, discuss a possible offer, not make the buyers feel rushed and still honor my next appointment?

Easy! My return email read something like.... "Would you meet me for breakfast at Suburban House  10:00 AM...my treat, of course?" I included directions and waited for a reply.

The restaurant is right inside the Baltimore Beltway at 1700 Reisterstown Road and a few minutes from my next appointment.  (How convenient for me?)

It was obvious that the buyer had a few hours..they suggested the meeting. A quick response confirmed the breakfast meeting. What a time saver plus a chance to really bond with the buyers...treating them to one of my favorite places. The meeting was fun, enlightening, trust building and the beginnings of a transaction negotiation.

Quality time was spent with the buyers, they enjoyed the experience and we had a good time. When it was time to leave, I gave them my new business cards and it was a huge hit! He had special compartment in his briefcase....the card was going to be  a keeper.

You see I remember when we were together the last time....his reading glasses were in the car and this Magnicard would have been perfect.

My Kitchen Burned Down! Baltimore, MD

My "Kitchen" Burned Down! Baltimore, Md

Well not exactly my kitchen, but I think I have eaten more meals in the Suburban House than in my own house or we did until last night. And we almost never get through a meal without seeing a friend or client. It’s just our favorite neighborhood deli and restaurant!

Suburban House SandwichSuburban House PlatterSuburban House Dessert

They make the best omelets (seems like about a dozen eggs), the best chopped salads, and have the best waitress, Mitzu, who knows that when I order a “chop chop” that’s not what it is called on the menu. It is an oriental chicken salad that is finely chopped. They make wonderful matzoh ball soup and sky-high corned beef sandwiches and one of the best steak subs around. If you still have room, their desserts are gorgeous.

But look at what happened at 5:00 pm yesterday: Fire in storage building damages popular Pikesville restaurant. From the news reports, no one was hurt, thank goodness, and about 30 customers and employees got out safely.

Fire Damage - Window Fire Damage

Fire DebrisI couldn't stay away when I heard. I had to see for myself. It was dark but you could still see the damage was massive. The booths were just piles of charred debris, there was water damage, and broken glass everywhere, and the cleaning crew was there boarding up this Pikesville icon known as The Suburban House.

We wish everyone well and hope that they are able to open again soon.
