Coming out of the movies on a cold rainy day in Baltimore, the sun was setting below the dark gray skies.

Sunsets in Baltimore

To me it was a very pretty sunset...maybe not as dramatic as the sun setting on this Waterfront Contemporary Home for Sale in Baltimore County

But if we are aware and take time... the beauty is amazing. Even on a cold rainy day in Baltimore there is a pretty...

Baltimore Train Garden Glen Avenue Fire Station

Baltimore Train Garden Glen Avenue Fire Station

Free Admission

After  55 years this is the longest running fire house train garden in Baltimore. You don't have to be a little kid to enjoy and there is a lot to see and learn about Baltimore.

It is magical with many moving parts. If  you look closely, you will find fire fighting scenes, Elvis Presley, The Grinch, pirates, a drive-in movie complete with screen and cars, Natty Boh, a hot air balloon, a cemetery and many different trains moving around different tracks at different levels.

The exhibit is open every day from 10 AM to 9 PM and is located at 2700 Glen Ave 21215 in Northwest Baltimore.

Houses Do Sell In December....

Two Too Late HomeRome Signs in Baltimore

Too Late

Too Late

You are not seeing double. Today I  put up two 'TOO LATE' signs. In case you didn't notice it is December 24th and nothing sells this time of the year. You have heard that... right?

Each year I increase my listing inventory in November and December when most sellers wait until after the New Year.

Why encourage people who need to sell to list now and not wait?

Serious buyers and agents with qualified clients are out looking during the holiday season... even during cold, snowy rainy days.

If your home is not on the market, it is not going to sell.

What Special Parties Are You Enjoying This Season?

The guests were treated like royalty...no one ever had an empty glass, food was passed by elegant servers and hors d'oeuvres were plentiful and delicious. A full gourmet dinner was served with tenderloin, salmon, curried chicken salad on mini croissants, individual portions of layered potatoes, beautiful asparagus, gorgeous salad and lovely array of fruit and cheese.

Alice's Pretty Party 2012

Every corner of the beautiful home was filled with holiday decorations from trees to wreaths to whimsical elves. It was a wonderful party filled with beautiful people having a grand time.

The Chanukah House...A Baltimore Tradition 6211 Park Heights Ave 21215

Chanukah House Lights

Some houses bring more to their community than just a nice façade, and this was  one of them. For many years, one house  brought light to its neighborhood with a seasonal display that gave it the name of

"The Chanukah House."

The colorful display took a hundred hours to set up and drew throngs of visitors.

It was no accident that the house was so brightly lit - Ann and Morris Cohen brightened the community with their presence.

WINNERS! Photos Then and Now Contest Results

Twenty plus years in Real Estate was a fun trip down memory lane.  This was a great idea...thanks to Bryan Robertson for putting this contest together. This took a lot of work and even more time for Bryan, Greg and Leslie to go through so many good entries. I am honored to be chosen.

Go to the original contest  post  and check out all members who participated.

Via Bryan Robertson, Real estate broker Los Altos & Silicon Valley Luxury Homes (Sereno Group):
The winners are all set!  It took a long time to review all these entries and making a final decision was a difficult one.  Personally, I would rather have had a Top 10 Winners list because there were that many to choose from.  You all wrote some great posts and it was a lot of fun looking back on some pretty old photos.  A couple of lessons learned from this contest were:
  • Many agents do make an active effort to update their photos
  • Almost all photos are reasonably recent
  • The stereotype that agents all use "high school photos" is mostly false
First, I'd like to thank my two colleagues for helping out with selecting the winners.  They went through over 200 posts to look at each and every entry before making a short list of candidates.  The other judges were Leslie Ebersole and Greg Nino.

THIRD PLACE WINNER: Christine Bohn's entry Beware, old headshot may scare you
One of my favorite aspects of this post was the side-by-side, three picture montage that showed how her photo changed from 2005-2010.  Hair, clothes, even glasses changed and it gave a great perspective of the style she was evolving into.  Read this post because you'll learn about her first brokerage - shocking!

SECOND PLACE WINNER:  Brenda Mullen's entry My past real estate head shots for your amusement
Brenda is a great blogger and she's very good at telling a story.  Her entry was a great mix of narration, humor, and photos.  She also was nice enough to include links to the photographers who did the work which is a nice little SEO boost (good blogging).  She got bonus points for including a photo of her cards to show the changes between past and current.  Nicely done Brenda!

FIRST PLACE WINNER:  Margaret Rome's entry HomeRome photos then and now
Margaret is one of the top bloggers on Activerain and I think it's because she takes the time to write great stuff.  In this case, it wasn't the writing as much as it was the collection of photos that go back through her past pictures and how she used them in her business.  She showcased 20 years of photos from magazines, business cards, and advertisements.  Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Restored Reisterstown Home Is A Beauty

Restored Reisterstown Home Is A Beauty

This past weekend we  were guests at a lovely party at this restored Reisterstown Home. The hosts were terrific and made us feel so welcome. We had a great time.

Restored Reisterstown Home

The house was sparkling with warmth, holiday spirit and love. Everywhere I looked was wonderful eye candy and a story to share.

The pottery is  real ceramic pieces on one wall and faux painting mirror images on the other. So much creativity can be achieved with faux finishes.

Amazing what this couple has done with this historic  house showing an abundance of talent and patience. This beautiful home was divided into 3 apartments when the present owners acquired it about a dozen years ago.

And did I say we had a really great evening?

We are so lucky to have friends who include us in their festive parties and celebrations.

Shattered iPhone Is Not a Pretty Picture...But Lucky Me

Yesterday at one of my showings, I slipped and fell hitting the concrete with enough force to shatter my iPhone. In the condition below, the phone still worked except for the bits of glass I was getting in and on my fingers.

A phone call to Gadget Guru and a quick drive to 11000 Owings Mills Blvd. How lucky... this was just a few miles from my listing. Within an hour ...my phone was as good as new.

Great service, great convenience from the great guys at Gadget Guru.

34th Street is in Baltimore, Maryland

34th Street is in Baltimore, Maryland

For over 60 years Baltimore has had its own Thirty-Fourth Street,  Each December this Hampden neighborhood is turned into a miracle of sorts. If you are in or near Baltimore, this is something not to be missed.

We drove to 34th Street tonight after my settlement. There was an unbelievable traffic jam. I usually walk the block to  capture my pictures but this year I opened the moon roof, stuck my head and camera out and shot these photos. This was a wonderful way to see everything. Thank goodness Lee was driving!

Amazing what  happens between the 700 and 800  block  of W. 34th Street. Look what one neighborhood can do. Check out these pictorials from the past two years.

Quality and Quantity...Which is Important?

Quality and Quantity...Which is Important?

Inspired by Richard Weisser's post Quality v. Quantity  reminded me of another post also about quality and quantity.

Quality Quantity

How can we relate this to real estate or other areas of our life?

When it is time to buy or  sell a house, it is important to have an experienced person on your team.

One that does a couple of closings a year vs one that has a history of doing many successful settlements each year. Take a look at this example of making pottery

Sometimes we can be so hung up on getting it right, something so exact, that we are paralyzed by trying for perfection. Not everyone you meet will be a client and you won't sell every listing. But if you keep networking, blogging, meeting people, sharing yourself and your ideas, you will find buyers, sellers and even make new friends. You might even get very lucky!

We need the right amount of both quality and quantity but at the right time.

Will You Remember 12/12/12? I Bet My Baltimore Buyer Will!

Will You Remember 12/12/12? I Bet My Baltimore Buyer Will!

 12-12-12 @ 12 Noon in Baltimore

We had it planned...one of my last closings for this year. Since the buyer gets to choose the date and time of closing we decided that 12/12/12 would be perfect.  We held the settlement at Supreme Title at  11:00 and we were celebrating at noon. Perfect timing, smooth closing and a wonderful lunch at Ruth's Chris in Pikesville.

The food was outstanding and the service total perfection.

MARGARET ROME Now 25th on the ActiveRain Leaderboard

What a fabulous way to end a wonderfully busy day!
A call from Lynn Friedman letting me know she had a gift for me. The gift is this blog.
An email from Hella telling me about this gift.
...and a lovely conversation with Anna Banana who featured this post in BananaTude.

Thanks for mentioning Elizabeth Weintraub one of my favorite people on AR!

25th on ActiveRain Leaderboard
Congratulations on your Achievement !!!
Margaret Rome
In what seems like just a short time ago, Margaret Rome was one of the first members of ActiveRain. We have Margaret Rome 25th on ActiveRain Leaderboard now. Margaret recognized the future in blogging, endorsed the blogging concept and dove right into the “Rain pool. Many years of writing landed her in the top 25 members of the ActiveRain Community.
Book cover
Margaret’s position as 25th on the ActiveRain Leaderboard comes from leadership as well as posting.  Margaret invited many others to “swim” with her over the years. She wrote a wonderful book for Agents, Real Estate the Rome Way, containing her philosophy. Want to read it?
After buying and reading it, I implemented some of her strategies into my real estate and personal life, that’s for sure. You may want to read the book review written by Elizabeth Weintraub.
                                         Margaret Rome
Lots of time spent for becoming our special Margaret Rome 25th on ActiveRain Leaderboard. Although in 2012 members number over 320,000 (as per the AR home page), our early members continue to lead the way. I encourage you to read through the years of posts Margaret has written. Use the SEARCH bar to find topics that interest you. Listings post in Margaret's own unique fashion. Speaking of unique, Margaret’s idea of an OPEN HOUSE in the Baltimore, Maryland area is more like a special social event. Lots to learn from this wonderful person.

Have a happy day -

Do You Have The Patience to Wait?

Do You Have The Patience to Wait?

It takes patience to wait for business. It also takes patience to wait

For the Birds in Baltimore!

I really wanted to capture this Red Headed Woodpecker on the railing next to the red berry bush.

The challenge...not enough patience.

Red Headed....

This same patience is necessary when selling homes in Baltimore. You have to try things a different way. Instead of waiting and wasting time for this beautiful bird to lite near the red berries, I took a separate photo of the berries. Then I put the two together.

Hey it worked for me. I got the woodpecker and the red bush together but I did it the Rome way.
